I asked Susan if she knew where I could find traditional homemade boerewors, she came straight back with Biltong South in Fareham.
Apparently it all happens in the family kitchen.
Biltong South is a small home-based family run business. Half SA half GB.
We made our first ever dryer (for personal use). It was a motorcycle helmet box with a light bulb inside and a small pc fan on the side to dry the cuts of meat. We would make around 1kg wet batches and tweak little bits here and there getting our blends better and better for every batch we had made.
We started to offer our Biltong out to friends and family to get feedback on how it tasted and what it needed. Which became a regular thing, something we enjoyed making and sharing.
Then came the Chilli Bites, hitting the taste spot on the first trial batch we ever made. The same great taste you get today.
We were being asked about our Biltong by people we didn’t know. Friends of friends and their friends, which became Biltong South. Offering Biltong and Chilli Stix, then an online range of ready to eat products.
After a while we had to have a go at making Boerewors. Thinking it can’t be that hard to make a sausage! Our first ever attempt failed pretty badly. But we learned a lot and the next batch worked. Both taste and texture and we have kept it the same even to this day.
A lot has happened and changed from 2014. From just making Biltong for ourselves to enjoy. To making everything we now offer and sending it all over the UK for people to enjoy with us, and we love doing so.
